March 2nd, 2011Reclaiming Our Freedom in a Post 911 Era: Voices of Muslims Living in the WestKhadija Khaja, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Indiana University School of Social Work This presentation will discuss findings from an international qualitative study that examined the lives of Muslims living in Australia, Argentina, Canada and the United States pre and post 911. Dr. Khadija Khaja received her B.A., B.S.W., and M.S.W. degrees from Canada, and her PhD. in the United States. Her interests include international social work practice and curriculum development, Islamic social service delivery, impact of terrorism on Muslim communities, refugees, peace building, ethnographic qualitative research, female circumcision, ritual practices, cultural competency, child welfare, children of war, human rights, international curriculum development, women's health and rights, cultural competency, multicultural teaching pedagogy, and teaching clinical practice using technology. Her work has been presented in numerous countries around the world, she also has numerous publications and has been invited to give keynote addresses on global human rights and social work issues in different continents. She has received numerous awards for her civic engagement activities, and in 2008 received the Indiana University Women's Newcomer Faculty Leadership Award. January 26th, 2011Weapons Carrying in Israeli Schools: Implications for TorontoA unique workshop for agencies, practitioners, researchers and students on research findings about the factors associated with carrying weapons in schools.Please RSVP to Joanne: joanne.daciuk@utoronto.ca or 416-978-5720 For agencies, practitioners, researchers and students (there is no fee for this workshop) Mona Khoury-Kassabri, PhD, is a senior lecturer at the School of Social Work and Social Welfare, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem The presence of weapons in school is considered one of the most dangerous aspects of school violence. Prior research has identified several factors contributing to youth carrying weapons to school. These range from neighborhood and community factors to school and students’ attributes. This seminar examines the relative predictive power of individual and school contextual factors on weapon carrying. Dr. Khoury-Kassabri holds a MSW and a PhD (in Social Work). Her research focuses in general on the welfare of children and youth. Her research addresses both the factors underlying youth violence, and the ways to prevent victimization and perpetration and promote the welfare and rights of children. She has published over 23 peer-reviewed articles on the topics of school violence, discipline methods by parents and teachers, and children rights. 2:00 - 4:00 pm |
