Recent Media Coverage of Esme Fuller-Thomson's Research:
Esme Fuller-Thomson is appointed to the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and cross appointed to the faculties of Medicine and Nursing. Her three major areas of research are grandparents raising grandchildren, social determinants of disability among older adults, and depression among those with chronic illness. She primarily teaches courses in the area of evidence based practice, research methods and gerontology. Esme has been on the faculty at U. of T. since completing her M.S.W. and Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in 1995. She also holds a B.A. and a B.S.W. from McGill University.
Esme’s research has been published in the most prestigious journals in Medicine (e.g., New England Journal of Medicine, 2006), Public Health (e.g., American Journal of Public Health, 2005, 1999), Gerontology (e.g., Journals of Gerontology, 2001, 1999, In press) and Social Work (e.g., Social Work, 2005; Health & Social Work, 2000). Her research articles have been cited more than 250 times in the academic literature
Esme’s research has also had an influence outside the academic community. Her research on disability and poverty was discussed in Time Magazine’s cover story (12/04/06) on “This Year in Medicine”, the magazine’s annual review of the important developments in medical research. Her studies have been featured in all major wire services and in hundreds of newspaper articles on five continents including front page articles in The Chicago Tribune and The National Post and front of section articles in The Wall Street Journal and The Globe and Mail. Esme’s research on Canadian grandparents raising grandchildren was profiled in a television documentary on CBC’s The National. Her research on the housing needs of American grandparent caregivers provided the background for testimony to the U.S. Congress. The resulting legislation funding demonstration projects of public housing for grandparent caregivers was passed into law in 2003.
Esme has been an investigator on research grants funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Retirement Research Foundation, Centre of Excellence for Research on Immigration and Settlement, Health Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Citizenship and Immigration, Canada, the Commonwealth Foundation and the Archstone Foundation.
