Bruce Rivers, MSW (Toronto)
Bruce joined Community Living Toronto as Chief Executive Officer in August, 2006, an Association which is committed to helping people who have an intellectual disability participate fully in their community throughout the full span of their lives.
Community Living Toronto is one of the largest not-for-profit organizations of its kind in North America serving more than 6,000 people with a staff of over 1,200 and close to 1,000 volunteers. Community Living Toronto has an operating budget of approximately $62 million with over 76 program locations throughout Toronto.
Bruce is the former Executive Director of the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, a position he held since 1988. He was responsible for directing one of the largest child welfare agencies in North America with an annual budget of approximately $140 million, and more than 800 staff, 650 volunteers and 360 foster homes.
In April of 2004, Bruce was seconded to Ontario’s Ministry of Children and Youth Services, as Executive Director to the newly formed Child Welfare Secretariat, where he provided interim leadership to a major policy reform initiative focused on improving child welfare outcomes for children and addressing sustainability within that sector.
Bruce is the former President of the Child Welfare League of Canada and at an international level is the Past President for the International Forum for Child Welfare. Bruce has been a Sessional Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto on a number of occasions over the past several years.
Bruce holds a Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie University in Halifax, a Masters of Social Work from the University of Toronto.
