Workshop Name: |
Older Adults with Addictions [OOA101] |
Description: |
An addiction presents significant challenges; add aging, and the problems may seem insurmountable. Are we prepared to respond to the challenges facing older persons with addictions in our communities? What are the challenges? What are the resources available? In this two day workshop you will learn: Fundamentals of addictions, and the elderly and society Identification and typology Concurrent issues such as cognitive impairment, gambling addiction, and elder abuse The role of the worker and the organization Treatment approaches and intervention strategies
This workshop will begin with a discussion of the social context and normalization of alcohol consumption, and the differential meaning it may have to different populations and generations. Related to this, an addiction problem can manifest itself differently in an older person versus a younger person. And, within the older population with an addiction problem, there are distinctions. This awareness has implications on identification and treatment approaches. These topics will be complemented with actual cases and treatment options. No addictions treatment nor gerontology background is needed. This course would be appropriate for any human service professional interested in increasing their knowledge about, and responsiveness to, this population. |
