- Introduction to Bereavement and the Grieving Process (Module 1)Students will explore the history, theories and concepts of bereavement and grief. This course provides a conceptual framework for exploring loss and grief in more depth and detail in subsequent courses.
- Trauma and Grief Throughout the Life-Span (Module 2)The effects on an individual throughout the life cycle are examined. Learning about the different developmental stages allows the student to understand the biopsychosocial needs of a grieving individual throughout the lifespan.
- Spiritual, Philosophical and Cultural Issues in Grief and Trauma - (Module 3)This course examines the role and impact of spiritual and cultural beliefs of the bereaved in a rapidly changing society.
- Variables and Risks that Affect Trauma and Grief (Module 4)Many factors influence how a person grieves. Personal attributes, life experience and the nature of the death will be explored. Homicide, suicide and accidental deaths are examined in this course. The student will learn to estimate vulnerability and assess the risk of complications.
- Families Coping with Trauma and Grief (Module 5)Family dynamics are greatly disrupted after a death. The impact of grief on family members and their inter-relationships will be examined. The influence of gender, age and role are studied in the context of the family unit.
- Special Losses/Support and Healing Groups (Module 6)Topics include, Miscarriage, Abortion, Infant Loss, Elder Loss and Disenfranchised Grief. The second day will look at Groups: the formation of groups, group facilitation, and group support.
