This twelve-week course is designed for experienced counselling
practitioners who want to increase their accessible for clients via email. With
a low student-to-facilitator ratio, this highly personal and interactive course
employs a “practitioner-researcher” model and covers the three areas that are
essential to the provision of a professional, ethical, and effective email
counselling service:
- text-based communication and counselling
skills - technological issues and
skills - ethical issues
This is a hands-on course that focuses on practical skill building,
leading students to improve their text-based online counselling skills and
professionalism. Online group and dyadic processes are used so that the entire
course is a forum to practise text-based communication skills. Participants
from around the world will study and discuss assigned readings, learn about and
use secure email technology, practise a diverse range of therapeutic
communication skills and tools, engage in role-play, and receive personalized
clinical feedback.
There are 3 modules that must be completed in order to be granted
Cybercounselling Level 1 certification:
Module 1 Welcome and personal
introductions and Cybercounselling overview: theory, skills, technology, and
ethics. Module 2 Theoretical issues and
beginning practice Module 3 More practice, text-enhancing
techniques, and personal clinical feedback
Certificates are issued jointly by the University of Toronto,
Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and Worldwide Therapy Online Inc.

*Fees may be paid in full or in 3 instalments ($429
each). Discounts apply for members of certain associations. Fees include the
use of PrivacEmail (secure email system) for duration of the course.

Instructor(s): |
Lawrence Murphy, MA. Lawrence is the co-Founder of Worldwide Therapy Online Inc. (www.therapyonline.ca).
He holds an MA in Counselling Psychology from the University of British
Columbia and has been a therapist for the past 20 years. Lawrence has authored
a number of publications in the field of cybercounselling and has provided
training to individual therapists and counselling agencies on doing therapy online.
Dan Mitchell, MA, CCC. Dan is the co-founder of Worldwide Therapy Online Inc. (www.therapyonline.ca).
He holds a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of
British Columbia and has served as a Canadian Certified Counsellor with BC
Addictions Services for 21 years. Since 1994, Dan has pioneered the field of
cybercounselling and has authored several professional publications on the
subject.
Mary MacDougall, MSW, RSW. Mary is a past Executive Director of an accredited family service agency
in British Columbia. A graduate of Smith College School for Social Work, Mary
has many years of social work experience in Ontario, British Columbia and the
USA. Mary was a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for her work with Family
Service organizations. She is a certified Cybercounsellor with Therapy Online.
Paul Parnass, MSW, RSW. Paul is a highly experienced therapist in private practice that
specializes in Cybercounselling. He holds an MSW from the University of Toronto
and has been working in the counselling field now for 33 years. Paul has
delivered workshops and presentations on numerous topics in the mental health
and EAP field and is a certified Cybercounsellor with Therapy Online.
